Pakistan Super League Shift to January Under Discussion
The PCB and all eight franchise owners are discussing a potential schedule change. This proposal came from Walee Technologies, the league’s media-rights holder recently.
Officials discussed this shift to January at London’s Governing Council meeting. That meeting took place on September 1, 2026. Advertising concerns during April and May mainly drove this scheduling reconsideration.
Many companies spend advertising budgets heavily around Ramazan, leaving less afterward. This limits potential commercial revenue available during the current April-May window.
Financial Concerns Behind the Pakistan Super League Move
Franchise owners remain particularly concerned about broadcast revenue arrangements currently. Franchises currently receive 95% of broadcast revenue from this pool. Owners want guaranteed revenue shares regardless of the eventual tournament schedule chosen.
Walee Technologies reportedly hasn’t achieved expected financial returns from broadcast rights yet. The company holds these rights until 2029 while owning the Rawalpindiz franchise.
This tournament traditionally ran during February-March from 2016 through 2024 consistently.
Why the Shift to January Brings New Challenges
The league moved to April-May due to major ICC tournament scheduling conflicts. This window helped solve overseas-player availability issues during that specific period.
Returning to January-February could create fresh player-availability complications for franchise owners though. This window overlaps directly with South Africa’s SA20 and Australia’s Big Bash League.
Competition from these leagues could make attracting top players considerably harder. Winter weather also poses genuine challenges across key Pakistani cricket venues.
Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi often experience very cold January and February conditions. Heavy fog could further disrupt match visibility during those winter months.
Possible Solutions and Wider League Plans
Starting in Karachi before shifting northward could help avoid harsh winter weather. Pakistan already maintains a player buy window from November through March.
Their international schedule includes Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand series nearby. Owners are also exploring esports to attract younger cricket fans meaningfully.
The PCB is additionally considering a separate mid-year tournament for extra revenue. This January shift remains driven mainly by commercial and scheduling priorities overall.
