A promising franchise stint has taken an unexpected turn this week. One veteran spinner’s tournament plans have suddenly changed course completely. The reason behind it might genuinely surprise a few fans out there. Here’s everything you actually need to know about the situation.

Why Ravichandran Ashwin Will Miss MLC 2026
His campaign in Major League Cricket has ended earlier than expected. He suffered a right knee injury during a recent match. The setback occurred after he had bowled just two overs. Medical assessment eventually forced him to withdraw from the tournament.
This confirms the star spinner will sit out the rest of the season. Australian veteran Peter Siddle has been named as his replacement. Siddle will now take over Ashwin’s remaining duties this season. It’s a tough break for someone who looked settled early.
Ashwin’s Heartfelt Message to the Unicorns
Ashwin shared an honest statement after learning about his exit. He admitted feeling disappointed about ending his campaign so soon. Still, he said he truly enjoyed his time in San Francisco.
“I’m disappointed to end the season early, but unfortunately this injury means that’s the right decision. I’ve truly loved my time with the San Francisco Unicorns and will be cheering the boys on for the rest of the tournament,” Ravichandran Ashwin said in a statement.
He thanked his teammates, the coaching staff, and the entire organization. He also praised the franchise’s supporters for their constant encouragement throughout. Ashwin promised to keep supporting the Unicorns for the rest of the tournament.
After retiring from the IPL, he wanted more franchise cricket worldwide. Sadly, recurring injuries keep interrupting those bigger travel plans repeatedly.
Team Statement and What Comes Next
The San Francisco Unicorns also quickly released their own official statement. Graham Manou, their General Manager of Cricket Performance, called this a big setback. He said Ashwin’s value went far beyond just his performances on the field.
Manou called him an outstanding professional with genuine leadership qualities. He added that Ashwin left a real impact during his short stay. The franchise wished him a smooth and speedy recovery ahead. This isn’t the first time a knee issue has bothered Ashwin.
“Losing a player of Ashwin’s quality and stature to a mid-season injury is naturally disappointing. Beyond his on-field performances, he has been an outstanding professional and a tremendous leader within our group. Ashwin has had a real impact on our entire team, and we wish him every success with his recovery,” Graham Manou said.
He previously missed his Big Bash League debut for similar reasons. It’s still unclear if this is a repeat problem now. In his last game, he conceded 24 runs bowling against Texas. He bowled two wicketless overs right before the injury occurred.
For now, fans everywhere will simply wish Ravichandran Ashwin a quick and full recovery soon.
