Major leadership changes might be coming to Indian cricket very soon. BCCI officials have been discussing the T20I captaincy situation privately. Some tough decisions need to be made before the next international series begins.

Suryakumar Yadav took over as T20I captain after the 2024 World Cup. He even led India to T20 World Cup 2026 glory just weeks ago. But something hasn’t felt right with his personal performances lately.
The captaincy seems to be affecting Yadav’s batting form more than anyone expected initially. Numbers tell a concerning story about what’s happened since he got the armband.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Form Decline
The stats paint a pretty clear picture here honestly. Before July 2024, Yadav averaged 43.33 with a strike rate of 167.74. Those numbers made him the world’s best T20I batter easily.
Since becoming captain, his average dropped dramatically to just 25.88. The strike rate fell to 152.03 which isn’t bad but way below standards. He hasn’t scored a single T20I century as captain surprisingly.
His World Cup 2026 knockout performances worried everyone watching closely. Just 18 against West Indies, 11 versus England, then zero in the final. Those scores came when India needed him most desperately.
Reports suggest Yadav played through a right wrist injury throughout this period. Team doctor Dr. Rizwan Khan taped his wrist before every session. But injuries don’t fully explain the dramatic statistical decline really.
Why Shreyas Iyer Makes Sense
Shreyas Iyer brings proven leadership credentials to the table right now. He led the Delhi Capitals to the IPL 2020 final as captain. Then he won IPL 2024 with Kolkata Knight Riders brilliantly!
Punjab Kings paid Rs 26.75 crore for Iyer recently at auction. He’s taken them to an IPL final already last season. The captaincy experience keeps growing with each tournament appearance.
His batting form looks absolutely phenomenal at the number 4 position. Iyer averages 50.38 while striking at 173.42 since 2025 began. Compare that to Yadav’s 29.51 average at similar positions currently.
BCCI wants to avoid another captain carrying poor form into future tournaments. The 2028 World Cup and LA Olympics are approaching quickly!
