Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer played an outstanding innings scoring a smooth double century against Odisha in the Ranji Trophy at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai on Thursday.
Iyer reached his double hundred with a boundary off Debabrata Pradhan, taking just 201 balls. He hit 21 fours and eight sixes dominating the Odisha bowlers on his way to his third First-Class double century.
Right after reaching 200, Shreyas hit another four off Pradhan, surpassing his previous highest First-Class score of 202 which he made for India A against Australia in 2017.
This double century is Iyer’s second hundred in a row. He scored a century against Maharashtra in the previous round, although he missed the match against Tripura due to injury.
Iyer has been out of India’s Test squad since February 2024. He last played in the Test series against England and then lost his central contract. His last ODI was against Sri Lanka where Rohit Sharma’s team lost the series 2-0. His last T20I appearance was against Australia in Bengaluru in 2023.
Shreyas Iyer missed the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a back injury but returned for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the latest season. Under his captaincy, KKR won the title, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided final, securing their third IPL championship.
However the franchise released him before the upcoming mega auction. KKR retained Rinku Singh (₹13 Cr), Varun Chakaravarthy (₹12 Cr), Sunil Narine (₹12 Cr), Andre Russell (₹12 Cr), Harshit Rana (₹4 Cr), and Ramandeep Singh (₹4 Cr).
Shreyas Iyer will be part of the mega auction scheduled for November 24-25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This will be the second consecutive year the event is held overseas, after the 2024 auction in Dubai.
A total of 1,574 players will be up for bidding including 1,165 Indian players and 409 overseas players. The auction will take place at the Abady Al Johar Arena also called the Benchmark Arena. Franchises can fill a total of 204 squad slots with each team allowed to have up to 25 players.
