Rahul Dravid Assesses India’s WTC Final Hopes
Rahul Dravid believes India have fallen slightly behind in the WTC race. India currently sit fifth in the standings with eight Tests remaining. They may need around six wins to keep their qualification hopes alive.
“I’m hoping they do. It’ll be a great run if India can qualify for the WTC final from here. They’ve fallen behind a little bit, but the kind of quality that the Indian team has, you’re not going to write them off at any stage. They started well against Sri Lanka, so that’s a good first step,” Dravid said.
Their WTC campaign did receive a boost from the Sri Lanka series start. They won the first Test in Galle by a commanding 165 runs. Still, Dravid believes India’s talented squad shouldn’t be written off entirely.
Why the New Zealand Tour Worries Dravid
Dravid called India’s start against Sri Lanka an important first step forward. He specifically flagged India’s upcoming two-Test tour of New Zealand in October.
Away series in New Zealand have historically proven difficult for touring teams. Many of India’s younger players lack real experience in those specific conditions.
“New Zealand away is always a challenge. They are a tough team, New Zealand, to play away from home. A lot of the young Indian boys have not played in those conditions, so that’s going to be a big challenge. Hopefully, they can keep the guys fit and not have a lot of injuries over the next few months,” he added.
Dravid stressed the importance of keeping players fit throughout this demanding stretch. Avoiding injuries will matter greatly for India’s qualification push going forward.
A New Era Without India’s Senior Stalwarts
India’s squad is entering a fresh era following several major retirements recently. Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ashwin, Rahane, and Pujara have all stepped away from Tests.
Their absence makes the upcoming New Zealand series particularly interesting, Dravid noted. India will then host Australia in a demanding five-Test home series.
Dravid expects Australia to arrive highly motivated for that particular series. Many current Australian players haven’t yet won a series in India.
