CSK walked into Ekana Cricket Stadium hoping to strengthen their playoff position. LSG had other plans though, crushing them by 7 wickets. Now CSK’s qualification hopes hang by a very thin thread indeed.

How CSK Lost to LSG in Lucknow
Chennai posted 187/5 batting first, which looked good on paper. Kartik Sharma top-scored with 71 runs keeping the innings together nicely. Shivam Dube was not out on 32 while Dewald Brevis added 25 runs.
But captain Ruturaj Gaikwad failed again scoring just 13 runs early. Those early wickets prevented CSK from posting a truly challenging total. They needed closer to 200 on that Lucknow pitch realistically.
Lucknow’s chase started explosively with Mitchell Marsh destroying CSK’s bowling attack completely. He hit 90 runs with Josh Inglis who scored 36 runs. Their opening partnership of 135 runs basically closed the match already.
Nicholas Pooran ended things off by not out on 32 runs calmly. LSG goes home with wickets in hand making it look easy. CSK’s bowlers had no answers to that batting attack whatsoever.
Can CSK Reach IPL 2026 Playoffs Now?
Let’s be brutally honest about their situation after this defeat clearly. CSK sits on 12 points from 12 games played so far. Two league matches remain against Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Gujarat Titans ahead.
Winning both games gets them to 16 points total maximum possible. But here’s the problem – five other teams have equal or more. The race for IPL 2026 Playoffs has become incredibly tight now.
Net run rate will decide everything if teams finish level on points. CSK’s NRR took another hit from this 7-wicket loss badly. They need big wins in the remaining matches, not just narrow victories.
One more loss and CSK reach IPL 2026 Playoffs becomes mathematically impossible. The margin for error has disappeared entirely after defeat. They’re essentially playing knockout matches from here onwards.
What CSK Must Do Against SRH and GT
The Sunrisers Hyderabad match happens on May 18 at their venue first. Then Gujarat Titans on May 21 will close their league campaign finally. Both opponents are fighting for the playoffs themselves making this brutal.
CSK must win both matches convincingly to boost NRR alongside getting points. Narrow wins won’t help if other results go against them. The team needs dominant performances showing championship quality again.
Even winning both doesn’t guarantee IPL 2026 Playoffs qualification sadly though realistically speaking. Other teams’ results must favor CSK somehow through luck or fate.
