The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced the appointment of Abhishek Nayar as the team’s Head Coach for IPL 2026.
This decision comes just months after Nayar was removed from his position as the Indian team’s Assistant Coach.
According to a report in the Indian Express, Nayar was informed of this last week, and an official announcement is expected soon.

Nair’s Long-Term Relationship with KKR
Abhishek Nayar is not new to KKR. He has previously been a part of the franchise’s system, whether in the academy or as a support staff member.
Nair has worked with several Indian international players and played a significant role in improving their skills.
Furthermore, he was also the head coach of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) team UP Warriors last season.
“Nayar has been informed of the decision last week, and a formal announcement is expected soon,” the Indian Express reported.
KKR bid farewell to their former coach Chandrakant Pandit in July this year. Pandit played a key role in KKR’s 2024 title, but the franchise parted ways with him after three seasons.
Now, handing over the reins to Nair means KKR is bringing in a coach who understands their work culture well.
Preparations for IPL 2026 begin
Nair’s appointment as coach is considered a smart move for KKR. The IPL 2026 mini-auction is scheduled to take place in a few months, and a coach like Nair, who already knows the franchise, can make informed decisions regarding player retention and acquisition.
KKR’s performance last season wasn’t particularly impressive, and fans are now hoping that under Nair’s leadership, the team will return to champion status.
Interestingly, Nair is also currently the coach of the Uttar Pradesh Warriors. Managing the responsibility of two major T20 leagues could be challenging for him.
However, the timings of the WPL and IPL are different, so it remains to be seen how Nair manages both roles.
“With Nayar now at the helm, fans will be keeping a close eye on the developments the franchise announces around its team composition,” a report said.
KKR is now moving towards a development-first system, and Nair’s experience could further strengthen it.
