Major news emerged from the Punjab Kings ownership group recently about expansion plans. Co-owner Mohit Burman spoke with PTI about their future investment strategies. His comments revealed exciting possibilities for women’s cricket in India.

The Women’s Premier League currently features only five teams competing annually. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Giants participate. Three franchises share ownership with their IPL counterparts already established.
Burman’s statement caught everyone’s attention regarding their intentions moving forward. His words suggest a serious interest beyond just the men’s team operations.
Strong Interest in WPL Team Ownership
Mohit Burman made the franchise’s position crystal clear during his interview. Punjab Kings enter Women’s Premier League discussions as serious potential investors now.
“The WPL has already established itself as an important platform for the women’s game in a very short period of time. The growth of women’s cricket has been fantastic to witness.
“As for investment decisions, every group evaluates opportunities differently depending on timing, strategic priorities, and long-term business considerations. Not investing initially should not be interpreted as a lack of belief in women’s cricket.
“Personally, I think the future of the women’s game is extremely bright. We would love to own a women’s IPL team,” Burman told PTI.
The ownership group evaluates all investment opportunities very carefully though. They consider timing, strategic priorities, and long-term viability before committing. Not investing initially doesn’t mean lacking belief in women’s cricket.
Burman praised how quickly the Women’s Premier League established itself successfully. The platform created for women’s cricket happened in a remarkably short time. Growth rates have exceeded everyone’s expectations across multiple metrics consistently.
Commercial Success Exceeds Expectations
The quality of cricket in the WPL team matches impressed observers. Audience interest grew far beyond initial projections for the league. Commercial response from sponsors and broadcasters surpassed what anyone anticipated.
Grassroots impact shows young girls now viewing women cricketers as icons. Professional cricket became a viable career path for talented female athletes. The WPL created this transformation in just four completed seasons.
Mumbai Indians and RCB each won twice since the league started. Delhi Capitals finished runners-up in all four editions unfortunately. India’s women also won the ODI World Cup at home recently.
Punjab Kings’ Current Situation
The franchise already owns the St. Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League. They’ve invested in other T20 leagues outside India strategically. Adding a WPL team fits their expansion pattern globally.
Punjab Kings’ IPL 2026 campaign started brilliantly with 6 wins initially. Then, 6 consecutive losses followed that strong start disappointingly. They have one match remaining against Lucknow Super Giants on May 23.
Winning that final game while hoping for favorable results keeps playoff hopes alive!
