The International Cricket Council is discussing major reforms at the upcoming meeting. ICC Plans Shorter ODIs among proposals for international cricket formats. Different formats are facing different challenges requiring structural improvements moving forward. Discussion represents the initial stage rather than the immediate implementation of changes.

ICC Plans Shorter ODIs to Boost Fan Engagement
ICC Plans Shorter ODIs reducing the current length of cricket matches. Currently, each side plays 50 overs in ODI cricket. This results in 100-over matches lasting nearly the entire day. ICC believes shortening ODIs could make the format more attractive. Modern audiences prefer shorter formats requiring less time commitment.
Similar discussions about shortening happened during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Historically ODIs underwent one major reduction in cricket history. Originally ODIs consisted of 60 overs per side. India’s 1983 World Cup victory came in the 60-over era. Format later reduced to 50 overs over time.
India’s 2011 World Cup triumph occurred under MS Dhoni. ICC Plans Shorter ODIs considering another reduction for modernization. Shorter matches could attract new audiences to ODI cricket.
Full-day matches require a significant time commitment from cricket viewers. Viewer interest concentrated around matches involving Australia, England, and India. Bilateral ODI series excluding major teams attract lower audiences.
Reasons for ODI’s Declining Popularity and Engagement
ODI cricket has been experiencing declining popularity in recent years overall. Longer duration of ODI matches is viewed as the main reason. Most ODI cricket is clustered in 18 months before the World Cup. Limited sustained interest throughout the entire four-year cycle between tournaments.
Test cricket benefited from the ICC World Test Championship introduction. The World Test Championship increased interest in the longest cricket format. T20 cricket became increasingly popular due to its shorter format. The entertainment value is higher in shorter T20 cricket matches played.
Other Major Proposals and Implementation Timeline
ICC Planning dedicated scheduling windows for Test ODI, and T20 cricket. Multi-team international series would be encouraged more frequently overall. Continental cricket championships are launching across different geographical regions worldwide.
World Club T20 Championship featuring franchise teams under consideration. World Test Championship is expanding from the current structure to 12. Ireland, Zimbabwe, and Afghanistan were added to the expanded WTC structure.
One-Test series will contribute World Test Championship points. A two-tier system was introduced in the Test cricket format. Any significant changes are unlikely to affect the 2027 ODI World Cup. Implementation is expected only after 2031 based on the timeline.
ICC’s Future Tours Programme remains fixed until next. Major bilateral commitments already scheduled through 2031 are complete.
