Every team must make hard choices when a season does not go well. Kolkata Knight Riders now face several such choices before the next auction. Let us look at the facts in plain and simple words.
Why KKR Needs a Reset
The three-time champions finished seventh in the IPL 2026 points table. They won only six matches under captain Ajinkya Rahane that season. Injuries and the absence of several star players hurt the team badly.
Releasing some players could free money in the budget for the next auction. That money could help the franchise build a stronger squad for IPL 2027.
KKR Players Likely to Be Released
Reports name five players who may leave the squad before the mini-auction begins.
- Cameron Green
KKR signed the Australian all-rounder for Rs 25.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction. He scored 322 runs in 14 matches and took 7 wickets. KKR could release him and try to buy him back at a lower price.
- Matheesha Pathirana
KKR bought the Sri Lankan fast bowler for Rs 18 crore. He played only one match in IPL 2026 and took no wickets. Reports consider his release highly likely before the next auction.
- Mustafizur Rahman
KKR signed the Bangladesh pacer for Rs 9.20 crore at the auction. The BCCI removed him from the team’s roster a few days after the auction. Reports expect KKR to release him before the next auction.
- Rachin Ravindra
The New Zealand all-rounder did not get a chance to debut for KKR in 2026. He could end his contract and enter the 2027 auction for more playing time.
- Blessing Muzarabani
The Zimbabwean fast bowler joined KKR as a replacement player during the season. He took four wickets in his second match but did not play again. Reports say KKR will likely release him as well this year.
What This Means for KKR
The KKR players likely to be released include both big buys and fringe names. Green and Pathirana were costly signings that did not deliver the expected returns.
Fans should wait for the official retention list before drawing any final conclusions. Soon, the KKR players likely to be released may become official names. The IPL 2027 auction will decide how KKR rebuilds their squad.
