A captaincy vacancy has opened up at one major IPL franchise recently. One experienced leader’s name keeps coming up in this ongoing conversation. Here’s exactly what he had to say about it all.
The Captaincy Gap Left by Pant’s Exit
Lucknow Super Giants still haven’t named their captain for IPL 2027 yet. Rishabh Pant stepped down after LSG finished bottom of the table last season. He was then traded back to Delhi Capitals in exchange for spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
That move left a genuine leadership gap at the franchise now. Several experienced names are already being floated as possible replacements soon.
Why Markram Looks Like the Frontrunner
Aiden Markram is widely seen as one of the strongest available candidates today. He’s captained RPSG Group teams in both SA20 and The Hundred previously. Markram also led South Africa in T20I cricket during his career.
“I’ve got no idea. They can decide whatever they think is best. There are some quality leaders in that group that we have there, so I’m not too fussed about it. Whoever gets it I’m sure will take it on and do a good job, but the thoughts haven’t been there just yet,” Aiden said.
Despite being a clear frontrunner, he insists he isn’t chasing the role. He said he’s genuinely “not too fussed” about becoming captain himself. Markram believes LSG has several quality leaders capable of handling the job well.
Australia’s Mitchell Marsh is another leading candidate for the LSG captaincy role. West Indies star Nicholas Pooran brings his own international leadership experience too.
LSG could even look for a fresh captain during the upcoming IPL auction. Still, experienced options in that particular market may end up being fairly limited.
Markram’s Recent Experience Leading in The Hundred
Markram recently spoke about his time captaining Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred competition. He said he’s genuinely enjoyed leading despite the format’s unique challenges throughout.
“It comes with its challenges, but it’s been awesome. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. It obviously helps a lot to have guys like Jos [Buttler] around,” Aiden said.
The tactical demands of managing ten-ball overs stood out as particularly tricky. He credited experienced teammate Jos Buttler for helping him navigate leadership pressures. Markram called The Hundred tough but rewarding, praising its overall quality and intensity.
“He’s helped me quite a bit. It’s obviously much quicker, and still the idea of 10 balls from one side [is a challenge]. You sometimes think you’ve snuck five in, and you remember there’s still another five to the short side, or whatever it might be. But good fun, great comp, great standard as well, so I’m thoroughly enjoying it,” he added.
What Happens Next for LSG
For now, the final captaincy call rests firmly with LSG’s management team. Markram remains a strong option, but he’s clearly leaving the decision to them. Whoever gets picked will carry real responsibility heading into a crucial season.
