Comebacks make the best stories in sport, especially after a rough patch. One batter has just delivered a perfect example in a series finale. We trace the full journey and explain the numbers below.
Ishan Kishan Breaks Record in Hamilton
Kishan reached 1,165 T20I runs in 2026 during the fifth match against New Zealand. The match took place at Seddon Park on Sunday, November 1, 2026. India entered the final game with a 3-1 lead in the series.
Suryakumar Yadav held the old record with 1,164 runs in 31 matches in 2022. Kishan needed just 6 runs and got there with his fourth delivery.
Most T20I Runs by an Indian in a Year
Kishan now owns the record for India’s highest calendar-year T20I run total. He made 1,165 runs in 37 matches and 36 innings, with a best score of 103. The old mark stood for four years before Kishan broke it.
His feat also puts him ahead of Abhishek Sharma on India’s yearly list. Few Indian batters have reached such heights in a single season.
How the Innings Unfolded
New Zealand won the toss, and captain Mitchell Santner chose to bowl first. The hosts struck twice early and removed Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Samson made four runs off 10 balls, and India stood at 19 for two.
Kishan and Shreyas Iyer then counter-attacked to rebuild the innings. They took 16 runs from Nathan Smith’s fifth over to lift the scoring rate. Blair Tickner then conceded 13 in the sixth over, including a Kishan six.
The Road Back From Injury
Kishan strained his right adductor while fielding in the first match in Christchurch. The injury forced him to miss the second and third matches.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi replaced him while he completed rehabilitation with India’s medical team. Kishan returned for the fourth match in Auckland but scored a duck.
Ishan Kishan breaks record after managing just one run in his first two innings. That contrast shows his strong mindset and quick return to form.
The most T20I runs by an Indian in a year now belong to Kishan. Fans will watch whether Ishan Kishan breaks record numbers again in future series.
