Selection calls always face closer scrutiny when results turn out badly. One team decision has already divided opinion among cricket fans and experts. We review the facts and weigh both sides of the argument.
NZ vs IND 4th T20I: What Happened at Eden Park
India had already won the first three matches and secured the series. India won the toss at Eden Park in Auckland on October 30, 2026. They chose to bowl first and made two changes to the playing XI.
India lost the match by 87 runs in a disappointing result. Mayank Yadav replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who had struggled to make an impact earlier.
Dropping Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Raised Eyebrows
Ishan Kishan replaced the 15-year-old opener and that surprised many fans. Sooryavanshi had scored 45 off 19 balls in the previous match.
His innings included 4 fours and 4 sixes at a blazing pace. He also shared a 133-run opening stand with Abhishek Sharma in 7.1 overs. That partnership helped India reach its highest powerplay score in T20I cricket.
The Case for Sooryavanshi
Sooryavanshi has earned a name for his power-hitting, especially in the IPL. His IPL form helped him win his T20I debut for India.
Eden Park has small boundaries that suit his attacking style well. Many fans felt the team benched him at exactly the wrong time. Samson won Player of the Match in the opener, but his form later dipped. Sanju Samson scored 14 off 17 and 18 off 13 in the last two matches.
Why India Backed Ishan Kishan
The team management preferred Kishan’s experience over Sooryavanshi’s recent momentum. Kishan was returning from injury and needed more match practice.
India also wanted to prepare him for the ODI series, where he is in the squad. The plan was for Samson and Abhishek Sharma to open, with Kishan at No. 3. However, Kishan got out for a duck.
Was It the Wrong Call?
Critics say dropping Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after such an innings carried clear risk. Supporters of the move argue that Kishan needed game time before the ODIs.
The result suggests that dropping Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may have cost India a batting option. Still, India had already won the series, so the experiment carried limited risk. The NZ vs IND 4th T20I result will keep this debate alive.
