From Cricket Fast Bowler to Javelin Thrower Career
Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage was a fast bowler in cricket before becoming a javelin thrower. He began his cricket journey in 2012. He regularly bowled at speeds of around 134 kmph. His bowling speed was achieved at the Under-18 level.
During his cricketing days, he finished behind Eshan Malinga. Eshan was ahead in local fast-bowling competitions. His sporting direction changed after receiving guidance from his father.
His father was a former discus and shot-put athlete. His father’s background in athletics influenced his career choice. Pathirage initially trained in discus before switching to javelin.

His coach emphasized mastering the basics for long-term success. Leading into the Commonwealth Games, Pathirage showed consistency. During the 2025 season, he surpassed the 82-meter mark. He surpassed the mark 13 times in the season.
His major international breakthrough came at the 2026 Rome Diamond League. The Rome Diamond League produced a throw of 92.62 meters. That performance established a meeting record in athletics. He set a new Sri Lankan national record. It was the world-leading throw of the season.
Victory at CWG 2026 Over Neeraj Chopra
Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage recorded a winning throw of 89.75. India’s Neeraj Chopra secured the silver medal there. Neeraj’s best throw was 85.83 meters in competition.
India’s Yash Vir Singh claimed the bronze medal. Yash achieved a personal best throw of 85.41 meters total. In Glasgow, Pathirage faced an elite field. The field included Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem. Anderson Peters and Keshorn Walcott also competed.
The competition was held under difficult windy conditions. Pathirage managed only one legal throw during the event. Despite having only one valid attempt available, his throw prevailed. His 89.75-meter effort was enough to secure gold.
His victory came ahead of multiple Olympic champions. He beat Neeraj Chopra at CWG 2026 as a result. The gold medal made him Sri Lanka’s first javelin champion.
