A potential record-breaking signing is reportedly taking shape in Australian cricket. Sydney Sixers appears to be leading the race for a big name. If completed, this deal could genuinely reshape league contract history. Here’s everything currently known about this developing transfer story today.
Sydney Sixers Lead the Chase for Stokes
Ben Stokes is reportedly a major target for the Sydney Sixers this offseason. If he signs, he could become the highest-paid overseas player in BBL history. Sydney Sixers hold an advantage thanks to coach Matthew Mott, who previously worked with him.
Hobart Hurricanes are also interested, with their chief executive expressing past interest too. Stokes last played BBL cricket back in 2014-15 for Melbourne Renegades. He scored 128 runs and took 3 wickets during that stint.
Why a New Contract System Could Help
Cricket Australia is reportedly considering major changes to BBL recruitment rules soon. They may replace the current draft with direct overseas player signings instead. This proposed marquee-player model would give clubs more freedom to compete.
Each club could access a pool worth AUD 1.375 million for marquee players. Stokes could reportedly command around AUD 600,000 under this new structure. That figure would potentially set a new BBL record for overseas players.
Stokes may still weigh the BBL against South Africa’s SA20 tournament too. That competition begins in mid-January, overlapping with his holiday plans in England. An IPL return looks unlikely anytime soon due to current BCCI rules.
He can’t enter the IPL auction again until 2028, after skipping the 2025 mega auction. Stokes also skipped this season’s edition of The Hundred entirely. That leaves the BBL and county cricket as his main active options.
