Team India Unhappy with Practice Pitch Grass Cover
Team India, led by Shubman Gill, reportedly raised concerns about the practice pitch. The three-day warm-up match begins on August 7 in Colombo. India had expected a spin-friendly surface to aid their Test preparation.
Instead, the pitch carried noticeable grass, leaving the team unhappy about it. Team India unhappy with practice pitch conditions is the story dominating pre-series buzz. The original four-day fixture was also reduced to just three days.
Ground Officials Explain the Pitch Preparation
Nondescripts Cricket Club official A. Francke explained the grass was kept deliberately. He said this was mainly because the match ran only three days. Francke confirmed India complained about the grass but remained otherwise satisfied overall.
“The Indian team said that there is too much grass on the wicket, but that is how we keep it because it is a three-day game. You can’t give a wicket without grass. Other than that, they were happy with it. The wicket we have given is a good wicket, so I can’t tell whether it will favor any team. It depends on how they play,” Francke said.
He added that Sri Lanka Cricket had specifically requested that grass cover. According to Francke, the wicket aims to stay fair for both teams. He expects high scores initially, with spin help arriving by day two or three.
“The tinge of grass has been requested by Sri Lanka cricket, so we will keep it like that. Maybe conditions will change, but normally NCC wickets are good batting tracks. We are hoping that there will be high scores here. But the Indian batters can have good practice here before they go to Galle.”
“Our wicket may help the spinners on the second day or third day. But I will suggest anybody who wins the toss here to bat first. We always prepare good and fair wickets.”
India’s Injury Concerns Ahead of the Series
India head into this series dealing with several injury concerns currently. Jasprit Bumrah is out due to a left knee injury. Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Washington Sundar are all also unavailable.
This practice match should help India finalize combinations before the first Test. India currently sit fifth in the WTC standings after a mixed cycle. Their recent results include a drawn series in England and mixed home results.
What’s at Stake in the Sri Lanka Tests
India hold a strong historical record against Sri Lanka in Test cricket overall. They’ve won 22 of 45 matches, with Sri Lanka winning just seven. India haven’t lost a series there since way back in 2008 either.
The first Sri Lanka Test begins in Galle on August 15, 2026. The second Test then follows in Colombo starting August 23. This series carries real importance for India’s ongoing WTC campaign.
