A big role in Indian cricket has suddenly become vacant this month. Fans are now guessing which famous names might fill it.

Why The Indian Men’s Chief Selector’s Seat Is Empty
Ajit Agarkar’s term ended on October 4, 2026, after he chose not to seek an extension. He took charge on July 4, 2023, replacing Chetan Sharma. India won three ICC tournaments during his time in charge.
Those wins were the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup. Fans now ask who could replace Ajit Agarkar as India’s chief selector.
The BCCI has invited applications for the West Zone vacancy until October 14, 2026. Former spinner Pragyan Ojha is serving as interim chairman for now.
Parthiv Patel – The Frontrunner
Former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel is widely seen as the top pick for India’s chief selector. Reports from September 2026 named him as a strong contender. He played 25 Tests, 38 ODIs, and two T20Is for India.
Patel reportedly meets the BCCI’s rules, including the required five years since retirement. He made his Test debut at 17 years and 153 days old. He later worked in scouting and coaching roles with Gujarat Titans.
Many believe he is the top answer to who could replace Ajit Agarkar.
Sameer Dighe – The Surprise Name
Former wicketkeeper-batter Sameer Dighe has also entered the discussion. Cricket expert Aakash Chopra shared this news on October 9, 2026. Chopra said his sources suggest Dighe is being considered for the role.
He added that this name might surprise some cricket followers. Dighe played 6 Tests and 23 ODIs for India before retiring. He later moved into coaching and served as Mumbai’s head coach for one season.
His knowledge of cricket helps, because Mumbai belongs to the West Zone.
Ramesh Powar – The Experienced Coach
Former off-spinner Ramesh Powar is the third possible name on this list. He previously coached India’s women’s team and Gujarat’s senior side. He was recently appointed chairman of the Junior National Selection Committee.
That job gives him a broad view of India’s talent pool across age groups. However, no official senior appointment has been reported for Powar. The BCCI is expected to decide after October 14, 2026.
Whoever wins will lead the senior men’s selection committee for India. Many fans wonder if Powar is among those who could replace Ajit Agarkar.
