Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, who is captaining India D was bowled during game against India A in the Duleep Trophy 2024. This match is taking place at the Rural Development Trust Stadium in Anantapur.
Iyer, who bagged a duck in the first innings, looked in decent touch during the ongoing second innings for his team. The right-hander batted positively and played some crisp shots. Given his approach, a big score seemed likely, but that was not to be.
Coming in to bat at No. 4, Iyer aimed to score runs quickly for the team in a significant chase. He produced some eye-catching strokes and appeared comfortable, trying to put pressure back on the opposition despite having gotten out for a duck in the first innings.
However, his positivity also led to his downfall. The batter attempted to launch spinner Shams Mulani out of the park but missed the ball, resulting in his stump being shattered. With the kind of start he had, it’s fair to say he squandered the chance to score big runs for the team.
On the last ball of the 47th over, Mulani bowled a shorter delivery from around the wicket. Iyer aimed to whack it through square leg, but the ball kept slightly lower than expected. It went past the inside edge to nutmeg the batter, crashing into the leg stump as he swung across the line.
Once having scored a century on his Test debut for India, Iyer was dropped from the squad following the two Tests against England, having delivered a series of low scores and struggled in overseas conditions.
He returned from those matches with scores of 35, 13, 27, and 29 in the first two Tests against the England National Cricket Team.
Overall Iyer has amassed 811 runs in 14 Tests at an average of 38.86 featuring one century and five fifties. With the Ranji Trophy approaching and India gearing up for 10 Tests in the coming months he would undoubtedly want to make a significant impact to earn his place back in the squad.
