Mumbai had a really bad season this year. Finishing in ninth place is terrible for a team like MI. They’ve won 5 championships before. Now they’re nowhere near playoffs. 8 points is just awful honestly.

Hardik Pandya became captain back in December 2023. Since then, the team just kept failing. In 2023 they finished dead last. This year they’re 9th. That’s two bad seasons too early. The management probably wants to make changes. Reports say Hardik might get removed.
The franchise needs a new direction clearly. Someone else should take the captain’s role. Three names are being discussed basically. All three are solid options for MI. Each one brings something different to captaincy.
- Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah is probably the best choice honestly. The guy has been with Mumbai since he started his career. He’s one of the world’s top bowlers. No debate about his quality. His bowling changes matches single-handedly.
Bumrah already captained India in some formats. He led in Test cricket and T20 internationals. So he has international captaincy experience. He even captained MI in one match in 2026. That game went well apparently.
But there’s one issue with Bumrah. His fitness is always a concern. Injuries keep bothering him unfortunately. He’s had back problems in the past. T20 is less demanding than Test cricket though. Maybe that would help his availability. Still, it’s a risk naming him captain. But his quality on the field is undeniable really.
- Tilak Varma
Tilak Varma is the second option here. The young guy joined MI back in 2022. Cost the franchise 1.7 crore rupees. He’s shown great temperament in big matches. Plays without fear even under pressure. That’s the sign of a good captain honestly.
In 2026, Tilak played fearless cricket. He didn’t panic in tight situations. That composure is what captains really need. He scored runs when they mattered most. The team responded when he batted. That kind of leadership matters in cricket.
He’s young and hungry for responsibility. New captains sometimes bring fresh energy. The team might play better under him. Tilak represents the future of MI basically. But he lacks international captaincy experience. That could be a concern for some people.
- Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav is another option honestly. He captained India to the T20 World Cup 2026 win. That’s a massive achievement. Leading India to any title is huge. His captaincy credentials are definitely there. He knows how to win tournaments.
Suryakumar has been at MI since 2018. Long history with the franchise basically. He scored decent runs in 2026. Two half centuries from 13 matches. In 2025 he got 717 runs. That shows he can contribute with the bat.
But he captained only in a few games. Limited captaincy experience at the MI level. Still, his World Cup success matters a lot. He knows how to handle pressure situations. His track record speaks for itself.
