Suryakumar Yadav got sacked from the T20 captaincy just after winning the T20 World Cup 2026. Shreyas Iyer took his place. Tilak Varma became vice captain. But that’s not all honestly. Suryakumar Yadav got dropped too, not just as captain but as a batsman.

He’s now completely out of the squad for the England and Ireland tour. For the Asian Games also. This is a massive blow for a player of his stature. A career-defining moment is coming his way.
The exclusion hit hard apparently. After leading India to the World Cup, now removed from everything basically. No captain role, no playing. Just on the sidelines watching, that’s tough for any player.
Suryakumar Yadav faced a similar situation. Retirement speculation started immediately. Is he going to quit? Nobody knows officially yet but his removal is sad.
The selection committee dropped him. New players are getting chances. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi got called. Prince Yadav got an opportunity. These were deliberate choices. Making a statement about the future by moving away from old faces.
Suryakumar Yadav is paying the price for poor recent performances. That’s why removal happened from matters more than history.
His Awful Recent Performance
Suryakumar’s form was really bad. In the IPL 2026 season, he scored 270 runs in 13 matches. The average was basically 20, and the strike rate wasn’t impressive. That’s not acceptable honestly. For an experienced player, his reputation was damaged.
The World Cup wasn’t great either, 242 runs in 8 matches total. Average over 40 looks good, but it is misleading because most runs came against weak teams.
He was easy to bat well but against strong teams he failed. The semi-final was a disaster. The final was also poor, not performing when it mattered. That showed his real form. Suryakumar Yadav struggled badly against quality opposition basically. That’s the harsh reality.
Future Looks Uncertain Now
Early retirement possibility is real. Suryakumar Yadav could announce it. Playing in the Mumbai T20 league, recently scored 48 in just 24 balls. Good form in domestic but international doors closing.
No official statement yet, but return looks unlikely. Seriously, his chances are gone. The selection committee made a choice by moving forward without him.
He congratulated Shreyas on Instagram and on the field too. Said it’s a proud moment because Mumbai is producing 3 back-to-back captains. That’s respectful behavior honestly but doesn’t change reality. His T20I career is almost finished.
Early retirement is logical. What else can he do? The international team doesn’t want Suryakumar Yadav anymore. Age factor also matters as he’s not young anymore. Recovery from poor form becomes harder with age.
