Cricket officials rarely attract headlines, yet this story has surprised many fans. A new arrangement between two cricket boards explains this unusual situation. Here is a simple explanation of what is really happening.

Why Australian Umpires Are Umpiring in Ranji Matches
The BCCI and Cricket Australia have launched a new umpire exchange programme together. This programme lets umpires officiate in each other’s domestic competitions. The main goal is to improve umpiring standards across both countries.
It also exposes officials to different playing conditions and cricket systems. The boards also hope to encourage stronger professional cooperation between them.
Ben Treloar Arrives in India
Australian umpire Ben Treloar will officiate in two Ranji Trophy matches during the 2026 season. His first match is Delhi vs Gujarat, scheduled for October 18 to 21 in Delhi. His second match is Mumbai vs Haryana, scheduled for October 26 to 29 in Mumbai.
Treloar has officiated in 30 first-class matches and 20 List A matches. He has also stood in 39 Big Bash League matches. He works as Umpire Education Officer for Cricket New South Wales, helping train new umpires.
He has also won the George Borwick Memorial Award four times for umpiring education.
Parashar Joshi Heads to Australia
Indian umpire Parashar Joshi will travel to Australia as part of this reciprocal arrangement. He will officiate in three domestic matches during his visit. His first match is Queensland vs Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield at Brisbane.
He will then officiate a One-Day Cup match at the same Brisbane venue. His final match is New South Wales vs Queensland at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Joshi has officiated in 19 first-class matches, 32 List A matches and 40 T20 matches. His experience also includes the Indian Premier League and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Why This Exchange Matters for Umpires
Indian domestic cricket offers varied pitches, weather and match conditions across different venues. Australian domestic cricket often features pitches with greater bounce and seam movement.
Working in unfamiliar environments should help both umpires improve their decision-making and communication with players. It should also sharpen their match-management skills in demanding situations.
Fans will watch how this exchange influences officiating standards in both countries. That is why Australian umpires are umpiring in Ranji matches this season.
