BCCI Responds to Criticism With a Clear Statement
The BCCI responds to criticism by ruling out any second-string team plan. India will not send a weaker squad to the Asian Games 2026. This clarification follows an earlier report about facility concerns in Japan.
India aims to defend gold medals won in both cricket categories. Those medals came from the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou. The BCCI will continue monitoring facilities through its appointed observer.
However, these concerns will not weaken India’s main squad selections.
Why Facilities Sparked This Asian Games 2026 Debate
Major concerns center around Korogi Athletic Park’s current playing facilities. This venue was originally built for baseball before its cricket conversion. Permanent dressing rooms are missing, with temporary tents used instead currently.
Washrooms remain located nearly 500 metres away from the playing area. Officials also raised concerns about small hotel rooms given to players. The BCCI and ACC reportedly shared these concerns with Japanese Olympic officials.
“We told Japan Olympic officials during an ACC meeting that the dressing rooms were set up in tents and washrooms were 500 m away from those tents, which has created an unsatisfactory situation for the players. Also, the hotel rooms are really small, and it is a big concern,” an official said.
This ground holds roughly 300 spectators and uses a hybrid grass pitch. The venue already hosted six matches during May’s T20 World Cup qualifiers.
India’s Strong Squads for Asian Games 2026
India already secured direct qualification for the men’s quarter-finals stage. Their first knockout clash will feature the runner-up from Group A. That group includes Afghanistan, Nepal and Japan as key contenders.
Shreyas Iyer will captain the men’s squad, with Tilak Varma supporting him as deputy. The squad features Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. Sanju Samson has been added as a reliable wicketkeeping option.
Harmanpreet Kaur will lead India’s women’s team into this tournament confidently. Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Varma and Renuka Thakur strengthen this experienced women’s squad.
Schedule and Legacy Heading Into Asian Games 2026
Women’s cricket matches will run from September 17 to 22. Men’s cricket matches follow between September 24 and October 3. India won both cricket golds during the previous 2023 Asian Games edition.
The men’s 2023 final was washed out, favouring India through higher seeding. This BCCI response confirms India remains fully committed to defending both titles.
