Accommodation arrangements rarely make cricket headlines, but this story changes that completely. A fresh disagreement has now emerged between two major sports bodies. Here is the complete picture behind this developing situation.
IOA Rejects BCCI’s Special Stay Request Firmly
The IOA rejects BCCI’s special stay request for Indian cricketers heading to Japan. This decision follows the IOA’s policy of equal treatment across all sports.
India fields cricketers alongside athletes from 36 different sporting disciplines there. If BCCI wants separate accommodation, it must handle everything independently instead. This includes accommodation, food, transportation and ensuring players reach venues on time.
IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer said BCCI can arrange its own hotels freely. This applies if organiser-provided hotels don’t meet the board’s specific requirements.
“BCCI CEO Hemang Amin got in touch with us, and we had a fruitful discussion. They are contemplating sending an advance team to Japan to assess the facilities,” Iyer said.
“The IOA is completely fine with that. Based on their assessment, they can decide whether they want to use the organisers’ facilities or make their own arrangements.”
What This Means for Asian Games 2026 Planning
BCCI CEO Hemang Amin has already discussed this matter directly with the IOA. The board is now considering sending an advance team to Japan. This team would inspect proposed hotels, the cricket venue and other facilities.
The IOA has confirmed it won’t pursue separate accommodation for cricket teams. It expects BCCI and organisers to find a workable solution together instead. Organisers have already allocated hotels for both Indian cricket teams currently.
Men’s team members would stay at the three-star APA Hotel Nagoya Ekimae. Women’s team members would stay at the four-star Meitetsu Grand Hotel instead.
Accommodation Concerns Ahead of Asian Games 2026
These assigned hotels reportedly include necessary amenities for player comfort overall. However, they remain below the five-star standard players are typically accustomed to. Another concern involves rooms being offered on a twin-sharing basis only.
The women’s team faces an especially demanding schedule around this tournament period. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, they return from Dubai’s Asia Cup on September 13.
They then travel straight to Nagoya just one day later. Their Asian Games campaign officially begins on September 17 as scheduled.
BCCI’s Next Steps Before Asian Games 2026
The advance BCCI team plans to visit Japan early next week for inspection. This visit will help the board make its final accommodation decision. Iyer stressed that the goal remains protecting athlete welfare above everything else.
He wants players to focus purely on performance, without unnecessary logistical distractions nearby. Iyer called this proactive inspection approach a genuinely first-time initiative overall.
