Will Sanju Samson appointed captain of the Delhi Capitals be true news? Reports say he’s in serious talks with DC management now. The wicketkeeper-batsman might leave the Rajasthan Royals before this season.
Samson feels unhappy with RR’s recent team decisions. The biggest issue was releasing Jos Buttler from the squad suddenly. RR retained Samson for a massive ₹18 crore amount. But money alone can’t fix broken trust between player and franchise.

Why Sanju Samson Wants to Leave Rajasthan Royals
Samson played only 9 matches in IPL 2025 due to injury. He scored 285 runs during that limited playing time overall. The team’s strategy differences upset him badly over time. RR management and Samson disagreed about which players to keep. Jos Buttler’s release became the breaking point for their relationship.

Cricket expert Rohit Juglan shared the latest info about Sanju Samson’s status with the RR management. He shared that during matches against Delhi, Samson sat away from teammates oddly.
“Sanju wanted Jos Buttler to be retained, but Rajasthan didn’t. He didn’t want changes in the top order. It wasn’t that he was against Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He just didn’t want to compromise his position. Sanju was fully available to lead the side during the first two or three games,” Juglan said.
“When I watched the Delhi match, the one that went into a Super Over, it became clear that there was a difference of opinion. Sanju was sitting separately while the rest of the team was discussing strategy. Even when a player called him to join the huddle, he stayed back. That’s when it became evident that things weren’t right between Sanju Samson and Rajasthan Royals.”
Delhi Capitals’ Offer Makes Sanju Samson Appointed Captain Possible
Talks between Samson and DC happened during the Asia Cup 2025. Delhi offered him the captaincy role for IPL 2026 reportedly. This would make Sanju Samson the official captain of the Delhi Capitals. The offer sounds tempting for a player wanting a fresh start.
“I came to know about Sanju Samson during the Asia Cup 2025. I talked to some people, and there were discussions between Samson and Delhi Capitals not just about him as a player but also about him as a captain,” Juglan said.
DC needs strong leadership after its disappointing previous season. Samson has scored 4027 runs for RR throughout his career. His overall IPL record stands at 4704 runs across teams. These numbers prove he’s a quality player worth building around.
