Every big series begins with tough questions about who plays and who waits. Fans across India now want clear answers from the team leadership. The captain has finally shared his thinking with the media.

India Ready for the New Zealand T20I Series
India will start a five-match T20I series against New Zealand on October 22, 2026. Shreyas Iyer will lead the side in this important contest. The team wants to win early and adapt quickly to local conditions.
India’s most recent T20I series came against the West Indies. Bad weather cancelled the final match in Bengaluru, so the series ended 2-2. The New Zealand series gives the team another chance to find its best combination.
Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Must Wait for His Chance
Many fans want to see 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the Indian team for NZ vs IND T20s. However, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s entry into playing XI looks difficult for now. He faces strong competition from openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
Shreyas Iyer said the young batter has plenty of time ahead. He pointed out that the current openers score consistently and have won the World Cup 2026. Iyer also wants Sooryavanshi to stay happy and comfortable inside the dressing room.
“It’s important that a talent like him should always be happy around the dressing room. He is very young; he has more years to get opportunities. It’s not like he can walk in right now, because our openers are scoring consistently, and they have won the World Cup,” Iyer said.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns With Experience and Form
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has returned to the squad for this five-match series. Iyer explained that India needed more experience in its bowling attack. Several new bowlers joined the team after the IPL, so a senior voice helps.
Bhuvneshwar brings deep knowledge of the T20 format to the dressing room. The captain also pointed to his recent success in the IPL as proof.
“Bhuvi definitely brings a lot of experience to the team. We were lacking that a little, especially after the IPL. We had a lot of new bowlers,” Iyer said.
Bhuvneshwar helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru win back-to-back IPL titles in 2025 and 2026. He took 28 wickets in 16 matches during IPL 2026.
His return adds another proven pace option for the series. It also increases the competition among India’s fast bowlers for a place. Iyer called the situation a “sweet headache” for the team management.
What the Selection Choices Mean for India
Shreyas Iyer wants his team to focus on winning matches above everything. He believes consistent performances will decide who earns a place in the side.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s entry into playing XI may come later as he gains experience. For now, the focus stays on the series opener on October 22.
