Squad announcements sometimes carry small details that raise big questions. This latest selection has genuinely puzzled several cricket fans nationwide. Here is a simple explanation behind this unusual selection approach.

Four Injured Players Included Despite Fitness Doubts
India recently announced its 15-man T20I squad for the Afghanistan series. Four injured players included in this squad carry a conditional fitness tag. These four players are Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar.
Hardik Pandya missed selection entirely due to insufficient fitness recovery currently. This decision stands out because bilateral series usually avoid such fitness gambles.
The report links this approach to recent repeated injuries across India’s squad.
Injury History Behind India’s T20I Squad Selection
Harshit Rana missed nearly five months due to a troublesome knee injury. He returned during India’s Ireland and England tours successfully afterward. He later missed the England ODI series due to another fitness issue.
Bumrah played limited ODIs before being withdrawn from the Sri Lanka Tests. Sai Sudharsan also missed the Sri Lanka tour after failing to recover in time.
Suryansh Shedge and Ravi Bishnoi replaced injured players during the Zimbabwe T20Is. These repeated changes raised real questions about the quality of India’s rehabilitation process.
Why the Afghanistan Series Uses This Cautious Approach
Team management now wants complete certainty before fully clearing any player. A source said authorities want to feel “200 per cent confident” beforehand.
The Centre of Excellence avoids taking unnecessary risks during player fitness clearances. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained this conditional selection process publicly recently.
He said selection meetings happen three to four weeks before travel dates. A player’s exact fitness status can therefore change significantly afterward.
How the Conditional System Works for the Series
Saikia explained the “subject to fitness” tag applies during active rehabilitation programmes. Such players could become fully fit within 21 to 28 days. Excluding them outright could feel premature if recovery happens in time.
This system lets the BCCI retain a player’s spot temporarily while waiting. It balances avoiding rushed comebacks with keeping key players in contention.
This approach shapes how India’s T20I squad prepares for the Afghanistan series. Fans will now watch closely as these fitness tests near completion.
