Zaheer Khan Won’t Appoint Batting Coach: CEO Explains
CSK chief Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that the coaching staff is now complete. The franchise will not add a dedicated batting specialist for IPL 2027.
Viswanathan said new head coach Zaheer Khan alone made that decision for the team. The club now has a compact group with four main coaches. Fans had expected a replacement, so the announcement came as a surprise.
“Our coaching staff is complete. Whoever we announced yesterday will form our backroom team; we will not have a batting coach. It’s a decision taken by Zaheer. But yes, we are exploring the option of using Batty as a batting mentor. Discussions are ongoing,” Viswanathan said.
Gareth Batty May Fill the Gap
CSK is exploring a plan to use assistant coach Gareth Batty as a batting adviser. For now, Zaheer Khan won’t appoint batting coach, but an adviser could help. Talks about that role continue, and the club has announced no final decision.
Batty joined the staff as an assistant coach under Zaheer Khan. His exact duties could change if the club confirms the adviser role.
Fleming and Hussey Depart
CSK parted ways with Stephen Fleming after the 2026 season. Fleming had served as the longest-serving head coach in franchise history.
Michael Hussey also left after serving as batting coach since 2018. CSK won titles in 2018, 2021 and 2023 during his time in that role. The club thanked him for his mentorship, dedication and commitment.
As a player, Hussey also won 2 IPL titles with CSK in 2010 and 2011. Hussey also played six seasons for CSK before he moved into coaching.
The New Coaching Group Takes Shape
Zaheer Khan leads the group as head coach and key decision-maker. Albie Morkel serves as assistant coach, and Mohit Sharma handles the bowling.
Morkel also serves as head coach of Joburg Super Kings in the SA20. CSK hopes the new mix of experience will bring fresh ideas.
Rumors linked Ambati Rayudu and Suresh Raina with the vacant role. Neither former player received an appointment after the new structure appeared.
Many fans still question why Zaheer Khan won’t appoint batting coach support at all. The five-time champions hope this revamped group will lift their results in IPL 2027.
